Summer islands westeros forum5/17/2023 and from Qarth comes the goods of moraq, Leng, Ulthos, the Shadowlands, southern Yi-Ti, Sotheryos which is carried to Volantis and traded with the summer isles, the free cities and westeros Slaver's bay is where the the Volantenes (who picked up most of the lesser Vayrian colonies around them), Lhazareen, Ghiscari and the Dothraki bring their goods, slaves and wares to trade with the Qaathi since the the Hrykooni & Jogos Nhai and Braavosi hinder their ability to go via the Narrow Sea or the mountains of bones and travel directly through the red wastes is foolish. Or when Robert is in Essos the Golden Company lands with Aegon and tries to rally people as Robert is away from the throne. I think that Mopatis and Varys should have just sold off Danny to Drogo to get Drogo on their side and maybe then sow some chaos along the western coast of Essos in an effort to get Robert to help the Free Cities (since they are major trading partners and there is precedent for Westerosi intervention in the Stepstones) and maybe kill Robert in Essos. Maybe the Dothraki are fleeing some terror to the west? I don't know. There needs to be some more realistic reason why. There is just no point to them doing that. The Dothraki have no need and no desire to go to Westeros. The whole idea that Danny marrying Drogo would give Mopatis and Varys an army to help overthrow Robert is kind of silly. Make Essos east of the Rhoyne a sort of "Dothraki no man's land" where the khalasars roam, but nothing like they are now. So the Free Cities like Pentos and the petty kingdoms on the western side of the Rhoyne should be fortifying those bridges and fords so the idiot horse lords can't get through. The Dothraki can't just cross that huge ass river. I'd also have more petty kingdoms along the Rhyone, which should also serve as a nice buffer against the Dothraki. Tribute gets expensive and the Dothraki are going to want more and more. Especially since the Free Cities would find it far cheaper to actually fight them and annihilate them rather than pay them off all the time. And I know that's an oversimplification of the issue, but I just hate how the Dothraki are feared by everyone. But all Martin has them doing is raiding people and fucking in huge orgies. The Dothraki should have conquered cities and built their own. Part of the issue is that the Dothraki are just idiotic caricatures of the Mongols. Sarnor could be a major contender of the Dothraki Sea with the Dothraki and trade could flow up the coast of Essos, around the tip of Essos to Sarnor and the Thousand Islands. I think if you make the northern parts of Essos sort of like the Baltic you could then have a fairly populated area, especially if those cities are built along the end points of old Valyrian Dragon Roads. Then along the northwestern shore you can put one at the bottom of the Bay or Lorath. You could easily fit another Free City north of Pentos and then another one where Braavos is in canon. And put more Free Cities lining the coast of the western part of Essos. Personally I think if it's moved down to the bottom of the Braavosi coastline to be across from King's Landing, that might work. If Braavos wants to be the big banking capital, that's fine. Without those barriers people can expand freely in the massive regions and without splintering off into different cultures and ethnicities, as they'll see remain in constant contact with people who are just like them, unlike people who'd settle across big ass rivers and mountains.īut that would make the Slaver Cities largely obsolete.īraavos can be a major city but it just needs to be changed, like what you're talking about with the Netherlands. People can ride for weeks, but horses can't fly over wide rivers or through mountains. There just weren't that many physical barriers. That's why ancient China was able to be significantly more unified and homogenous compared to the much smaller Europe. Shit that actually isolated people and kept them from just filling up the space with their ethnicity. You have massive areas the size of contients that barely have any rivers, mountains, plains, etc. Like, seriously, it probably has less diversity than just about any continent on Eartb. Because, yes, while it is the size of South America, the diversity in physical geography is sorely lacking. I just want to say that one of the biggest complaints, Westeros' size, actually isn't as important as you'd think it'd be.
